Let’s face it, you probably heard the term ‘keywords’ at least a hundred times before. Even if you don’t have a clue about what SEO means or how search engines work, chances are you know you need to use keywords to reach your ideal couples. But what are they really? And more importantly, where do you find these keywords and what do you do with them?

As a wedding SEO consultant, the first thing I do with all my clients is to teach them everything I know about keywords. And in all honesty, it’s pretty simple and straightforward. So here we go! With this extensive guide, you will learn everything you need to know about SEO keywords, get clear on what your ideal couples are searching and feel confident about how to make use of keywords to get found on Google - and any other search engine including Pinterest!

What Are Keywords?

You keep hearing about keywords because they are the foundation of any search engine optimisation whether that’s for your website to be found on Google or to generate traffic through Pinterest. And that’s because keywords are the actual search terms people search on Google or any other search engine.

They can be words or phrases, short or long, generic or highly specific - anything that people go and put in that little Google search box is basically a keyword. Keywords can be quite short and general, such as ‘wedding planning’ or ‘wedding planner’, or long and specific like ‘documentary style film wedding photographer London’.

Keywords are super important because we use them as clues to help Google understand what your website is about and who it is relevant to so that Google will show your website to your ideal couples when they search for your services.

So to have a good SEO plan and a website that brings constant enquiries, you need to know what people are searching for online - in other words, find out your keywords - and use those keywords strategically on your website.

How To Find The Right Keywords For Your Wedding Business?

The first question wedding professionals ask me is ‘How do I know what keywords to use?’, which I’m pretty sure is what’s on your mind right now. The good news is finding the right keywords for your wedding business is super simple and quite fun!

Step 1 - Brainstorm Your Keywords

Every keyword research starts with simple brainstorming. Think about how you describe your business and services. What would you answer if the person who sits next to you on a flight asked you ‘What do you do’?

Then think about your specific approach and style - how do you define or describe it? Contemporary? Authentic? Stylish? Seasonal? Timeless? Write down all the adjectives that come to your mind.

Finally, think about what would you be searching on Google to find your services if you were your ideal couple. Create a list with all your answers, add your service locations into the mix and here you go - you just created a list of potential keywords for your wedding business!

Step 2 - Generate More Keyword Ideas

Now it’s time to go deeper and uncover keywords that people are searching on Google. There are a few different ways and tools to do this but to keep it simple, I’m going to show you the easiest and free way to do it.

Utilise Google Search For Keyword Research

I mean is there a better place than Google itself to check what couples are actually searching on Google? I don’t think so!

Google Search has three fantastic features to help you find your keywords: autosuggest, people also ask box and related searches.

Pick the most generic keyword from your list, such as wedding florist and put it in the Google search box to see all the related keywords Google is suggesting. The reason Google is suggesting those keywords is that these are what people search for on Google quite often. We are talking about hundreds or even thousands of searches in a month here!

Then hit search and scroll down to the ‘People Also Ask’ section where you will find out the most common questions related to your services people ask on Google. This is a super valuable resource to give you ideas on blog posts or FAQs. When it comes to the wedding industry, most questions are around costs but there are some gems in there too!

And last but not least, scroll down to the bottom to discover more keywords under the related searches.

Now you should have a lot of keyword ideas that you can use on your website.

Step 3 - Pick The Right Keywords

Now that you have a long list of keywords, it’s important to pick the right keywords for each of your pages. Yes, that’s right - we’re not going to use the same keyword over and over again.

As a simple rule of thumb, always make sure to pick one unique keyword for your homepage and each of your service pages. Each page on your website should ideally be targeting a different keyword to increase your chances of ranking on Google and have more visibility for a variety of keywords.

Go through your list and decide which keywords make the most sense for your homepage, about page and individual service pages. For example, you may want to use ‘luxury wedding planner’ for your homepage, while using ‘London wedding planner’ for your About and ‘destination wedding planner’ for your destination weddings pages.

How To Use Keywords Strategically

Give me a high five if you’re still with me! I know it’s already a lot of information but stay with me as we’re nearly there.

Raise your hand if you heard that the more you use a keyword the better you rank on Google. From this moment onwards, I want you to completely ignore this as it’s total BS! Instead, you need to use your keyword very strategically in certain places to tell Google what the page is about.

  1. Main page title

  2. Somewhere in your page body, ideally near the top of the page

  3. In a subheading

  4. Meta title or SEO title depending on the website platform you are using

There you have it! All you need to know about SEO keywords to ensure your ideal clients find your business and generate constant enquiries through your website. You now have all the necessary knowledge to find the right keywords and utilise them in the right way. It’s time to give a quick update to your website!
